Write Every Day! February - Day 15

Today I managed around 700 words of a new origfic thing that so far is mainly tropey self-indulgment, and so unsurprisingly is a lot of fun to write. But as it is also editing Wednesday once more, I spent the rest of the evening with a first editing pass through the next slavefic WIP chapter, phew. Because I'm such an awful procrastinator and get distracted so easily, I always do two passes; I use the first to do easy fixes etc, and mark everything where I can't immediately see a way to improve something but which still strikes me as awkward/possibly needing more research etc. The second editing pass is then solely focusing on those marked bits, which for some reason gets easier when I don't have the entirety of the chapter hanging over me. I have no idea why my brain works like this, but this is so far the best approach I've found in all those years of writing.

Anyway, this chapter has more yellow bits standing out than I like, so I guess tomorrow evening will be wrestling all of those into submission. (There is sexual tension though, so this is worth all the pain. Only took me 90k to get here...)

I wrote a few lines of random dialogue, but my brain's still completely empty of anything resembling an idea.

I hope this means your brain is making the most of its holiday and is off somewhere on a beach with a cocktail in hand while you're trying to write without it. <3

I'm imagining a cartoon brain on a deck chair, sipping from a straw. :D

Time always goes by way too quickly. I can't believe we're halfway to March when it was only just New Year's! /o\

I wrote 500 words of writing exercises, and a handful of sentences of fanfic.

That way of editing makes sense to me. I'm not quite that organized, but I usually do at least a couple of rounds, where I first edit the things I can immediately see a fix to, and then mark the ones I can't figure out yet and return to them. Our minds may work subconsciously on them while we're doing the other things, or it just gets easier when you know you don't have so many things you have to fix anymore.

Yay, well done!

Yeah, I think it's breaking it down into easily achievable goals that makes this more efficient for me - having an entire chapter to fix at once seems like so much, but when you first focus on he easy stuff, you later have only a handfull of hard cases left.

Your editing process sounds very familiar. I'm also leaving awkward or research bits for later rounds, mostly for the final one as they're usually bits which depend on how the story enfolds. I'm sometimes also doing the split window thing, having an empty document alongside and trying out alternative ideas there when I'm stuck, but not wanting to have them in my original writing flow. This is probably as complicated and absurd as it sounds. *g* I'm working with Scrivener where this is very comfortable, as the cursor position stays where you've last been in each document.
For my tally, I mostly read exchange stories and wrote reviews, but also wrote 300 words on that drawer fic.

Congrats! And you definitely deserve time to enjoy the spoils of the exhange now. :D

I use Scrivener for origfic, but not for fanfic - even though 90k into my current WIP I really wish I would have started out in it. /o\ But yeah, I'm also allll about the flow - I get so easily distracted and I know that if I tab away from my document to quickly research something, half an hour later I will still be lost on Google Books or back on tumblr.

I have a new case, which is great for revenues but lousy for fic. Alibi sentence today (and I was seriously grumpy!).

Yay for revenues, boo for old men. :( But at least you can channel the grumpiness into Javert later!

Another 1900 words and it doesn't seem to want to end. -.- What is this, story? You know there is a deadline.
